BioHubs is committed to providing a website experience that is as accessible as possible to all users, regardless of ability or technology. We aim to ensure that everyone can access and use the content available on biohubs.it, including users who rely on assistive technologies such as screen readers, screen magnification software, and alternative input devices.
Ongoing Efforts to Ensure Accessibility
BioHubs follows the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 as the primary reference for accessibility best practices. These internationally recognized guidelines outline recommendations for making web content more accessible to a wide range of users with disabilities.
Accessibility is considered an ongoing process. As new pages, features, and content are added, design choices, custom components, and code are reviewed with accessibility in mind.
To support this process, we actively use the WordPress Accessibility Checker plugin by Equalize Digital, striving to address its parameters, warnings, and recommendations as thoroughly as possible. Automated checks are complemented by manual reviews and functional testing.
Technical and Design Approach
We place strong emphasis on a clean and genuine implementation of custom elements, following semantic HTML standards and established accessibility best practices. Our development approach prioritizes predictable behavior, clarity of structure, and compatibility with assistive technologies.
Particular attention has been given to keyboard navigation. Core interactive components have been tested and refined to ensure full usability without a mouse. This includes a customized accordion for HUB selection, which has been specifically adapted to improve keyboard interaction, focus order, and overall navigability.
Accessibility Tools and Features
In addition to structural and technical measures, biohubs.it includes an accessibility widget designed to support a broader range of user needs and preferences. This widget allows users to adjust certain visual and interaction settings (such as text size, contrast, or focus aids) according to their individual requirements.
While this tool helps accommodate different accessibility needs, it is intended to complement—not replace—semantic, standards-based accessibility practices implemented at the code and content level.
Other accessibility-related features include:
- semantic and well-structured HTML markup
- meaningful alternative text for informative images
- keyboard-accessible navigation and controls
- clear heading hierarchies to support screen readers
- custom components developed with accessibility best practices in mind
- compatibility with common assistive technologies
Known Limitations and Areas for Improvement
We are aware that some aspects of the website may not yet fully meet all accessibility criteria.
In particular, color contrast is not always optimal due to the use of brand-defined colors. These colors are an integral part of the BioHubs visual identity. Nevertheless, we have taken steps to improve text visibility and readability wherever possible, aiming to strike a balance between brand consistency and accessibility.
We continue to review and improve these elements as part of our ongoing commitment to inclusivity.
Please note that, despite our efforts, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of third-party websites or external content linked from biohubs.it.
