Mission and Strategic Focus
The BioFood Hub aims to strengthen the regional agri-food innovation ecosystem by advancing precision fermentation and biotechnologies for sustainable food production, bridging academic excellence with industrial application within the STEP framework.
CORE PILLARS:
- Precision Fermentation & Bioconversion: Development of fermentation technologies for food matrices and ingredients, enzymatic conversion of agro-food by-products into functional compounds, and biotransformation studies using in vitro gut microbiota models (SHIME, Prodigest).
- Digital Integration & AI-driven Innovation: In silico screening of bioactive compounds using artificial intelligence and big data analytics, simulation of nutritional and health impacts from food reformulation, and precision nutrition approaches.
- Circular Bioeconomy: Valorization of agro-food side streams into high-value ingredients, supporting sustainable production chains and resource efficiency in line with EU green transition objectives.
The Hub operates through collaborative R&D projects, shared access to specialized infrastructure, joint EU fundraising initiatives, technology transfer programs, tailored training activities, and international networking through platforms like Ingredients for the Bioeconomy (I4BE).

- Technological: Accelerating TRL advancement in food biotechnologies and fermentation processes, enabling scale-up from lab to industrial application.

Infrastructure
Located at the Tecnopolo di Parma within the Emilia-Romagna High Technology Network, BioFood Hub provides dedicated facilities for the entire innovation pipeline -from early-stage R&D to pilot-scale validation and technology transfer.

- Ingredients for the Bioeconomy (I4BE) – EU S3 Sub-Platform | Multi-country partnership (BE, FR, ES, IT, GR, LT, NL)
- Focus: Transformation of biomass and agri-food side streams into high-value nutritional and functional ingredients
- Activities & outputs: Coordinated by Wagralim (BE), I4BE brings together agri-food clusters (including Clust-ER Agrifood), RTOs (including ART-ER), and regional authorities from 14 regions across 7 EU member states. Active collaboration on EU project proposals, inter-regional innovation pilots, investment facilitation, and technology scouting. Formal MoU in place since 2018.
- Benefit for the Hub: Strategic access to pan-European biotech innovation ecosystems, enhanced visibility for regional SMEs, and facilitated participation in EU funding calls.
- Food for Positive Health Impact – EU S3 Sub-Platform | European working group
- Focus: Developing food innovations that deliver measurable health benefits
- Activities & outputs: Participation in collaborative research initiatives, knowledge exchange on precision nutrition, and joint dissemination activities. Integration with regional strategies on health-focused food innovation.
- Benefit for the Hub: Alignment with EU health and sustainability priorities, strengthened positioning in nutrition and functional food research.
These partnerships, together with national networks and Clust-ER memberships, contribute to BioFood Hub’s medium-term sustainability by generating new project opportunities, industrial contacts and joint access to advanced infrastructures and expertise.
